Chess is a great passion with me.

This is a game that I have played for a very long time, and this definition of a chess addict perhaps describes me very well.

Through the years, I have had my opportunities to interact with people from other countries. In 1974, I took part in the inaugural Asian team chess championship in Penang. Like the rest of my teammates, my first exposure to competitive chess at this level was a sheer baptism of fire. Four years later, I was picked to join a Malaysian contingent on a goodwill tour of China. It came at a time when China was still very isolated from the rest of the world but the talents I saw there convinced me that China would soon become a major chess force in Asia and throughout the world. My other opportunity to represent the country was in 1982 when I captained the Malaysian team to the Chess Olympiad in Lucerne.

Chess has also taken me to Hongkong (I love the place!) several times in the late 1970s for the Asian cities team chess championships. The last occasion was in 1995. I think I was just as proud playing for George Town/Penang as I was when playing for the country.

Lately, I have become more involved with running tournaments. I have been an arbiter at international events such as the 1991 Asian team chess championship in Penang, the 1993 Asian team chess championship in Kuala Lumpur, the 1995 Asian team chess championship in Singapore, the 1998 Asian women's individual chess championship in Genting Highlands and most recently, the Wah Seong Penang International Master Chess Tournament 2000. I also ran the 1997 national championship, the open section of the 1998 Merdeka team chess championship and the 1998 Penang Canggih international individual chess tournament. Oh yes, before I forget, I am now a FIDE International Arbiter.

Finally, I just wish to say that I am one of the founder members of the Penang Chess Association. I used to be the honorary secretary but now, I am quite satisfied to remain just a life member. This is a great association where I am concerned.
